What to Expect From the Tara National Park and Mokra Gora Tour in 2024

Expect to spend some time in untouched nature and to enjoy spectacular views as you explore Tara National Park and Mokra Gora on this private tour. You’ll  get to see the famous Drina River House, you will walk through one of the best preserved forests in Europe, and marvel the view from an iconic observation point. On the following day, you’ll get on board of the Sargan Eight Train and you’ll explore Drvengrad-Mećavnik (Woodentown) complex. First Day

You’ll set off from Belgrade towards Tara National Park at 8.30 am after #YourSerbiaHost picks you up from your hotel or other address. You’ll head towards Bajina Bašta town and during the  drive you will enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains. First stop will be a café-restaurant on Drina River with a very nice view to the famous Drina River House.

Next stop is the source of river Vrelo, also known as river Godina (Year), thanks to its length of 365m.

After the break you will come close to Tara Mountain and soon you’ll enter the National Park. The ride stays at the parking lot and we will take you on a walk through the forest which is older than human kind. In Carpet Meadow your senses will wake up and you’ll walk on a carpet-like surface. Here you’ll learn about a rare endemic Tertiary species, the Pancic spruce

Till the next spot the drive takes through the forest to a point from which you’ll continue on foot. After a short hike on a forest trail you’ll reach the most iconic viewpoint with its spectacular view over the lake Perućac.

After all of those walks we will take you to the local restaurant on Tara Mountain, where you’ll enjoy the tastes of local food.

In the evening hours you’ll reach Mokra Gora for overnight.

Second Day

Second day is reserved for a ride on the famous Sargan Eight railway and Kusturica’s Drvengrad-Mećavnik (Woodentown) ethnic complex. The train Nostalgia departs from Mokra Gora station at 10:30, so until then you have plenty of time for breakfast and morning coffee. During the ride on Sargan Eight railroad, the train makes several short stops. Most of them are scenic viewpoints ideal for taking photos or just enjoying views.

After an almost two and a half hour ride the train returns to the starting point and you’ll move on to Drvengrad-Mećavnik (Woodentown). This complex was created by Emir Kusturica after he filmed the movie „Life is a miracle“. You might get surprised with street names in this town, since those are named after famous people Kusturica admires: Nikola Tesla, Bruce Lee, Ernesto Che Guevara, Diego Armando Maradona, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman.

For lunch break we recommend the restaurant Lotika in the Woodentown.

Optional Activity

In case you chose Drvengrad-Mećavnik’s Hotel Lotika as an accommodation option for overnight, instead of going there after the train ride we can take you across the border to the nearby Bosnian town Višegrad for a short excursion. Over there you can see an old Ottoman bridge over Drina River, take a ride on a boat, visit another Kusturica’s project – Andrićgrad and try ćevapi Bosnian style. This optional activity is with a supplement of 50-80€ group size dependent.

After two days of intensive exploration of these two beauties we’ll take you back to Belgrade. Arrival to Belgrade is around 8pm.
