Basalt columns near Kuršumlija

Another natural phenomenon was discovered over the last few days in Serbia. In vicinity of village Rudare at the foot of mountain Radan near Kuršumlija, wall consisted of horizontal stone columns length of 100m and height of 10m was found. This discovery places Serbia in rare planetary locations where these basalt columns can be seen. Stone blocks in different shapes with length no more than 1m are evenly fitted one into another which gives an impression of retaining wall made of stone masonry. Experts assume that this phenomenon is caused by volcanic activity colliding Pannonian sea. Another interesting discovery was remains of Roman fortification on the top of the basalt columns and remains of town at the foot. Characteristic of this geological form is that it appears only on locations with volcanic origin where lava collided with water fronts.

The most famous basalt columns are in Northern Ireland with authentic name Giant’s Causeway which is listed as UNESCOS’s World Heritage Site.

Maybe the most impressive religious complex made of basalt stone is Nan Madol from the 13th century located on island Pohnpei in Micronesia.

Representatives of local community in Kuršumlija hope for archaeological and geological explorations, while touristic organization predicts that this discovery will influence local touristic offer and become popular destination as Devil’s town.
