The National Museum in Belgrade opened the exhibition “Legacies and echoes. Stefan Nemanja – nine centuries”. The occasion for the exhibition is 900 years since the birth of the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty. Stefan Nemanja was the Grand Prince of Raska and creator of the powerful Serbian state in the Medieval time. He left a deep mark in Serbian culture, education, religion and art. Stefan is considered, along with his son Sava, for one of the founders of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
At the time of Stefan`s reign monumental royal endowment were erected and numerous of churches and monasteries were built and rebuilt. Thanks to its enormous construction activities authentic Serbian style of religious architecture has been made and known as the Raska style. Construction of monasteries Pillars of St. George is taken as the start of Raska style. Most notably are the Studenica monastery which he built as a mausoleum for himself and Hilandar which is restored from the ground with his son Sava in 1198.
The exhibition is composed of 23 copies of frescoes from Serbian medieval monasteries and 85 original medieval objects. The Miroslav Gospels will be exposed also. The exhibition will last until 23 February 2014.
